What is tire balancing and why is it important?

Tire balancing is the process of ensuring that the mass of a tire is uniformly distributed around a car's axle.  Unbalanced tires can most noticeably cause your vehicle to vibrate, but they can also shorten the life of your tires and suspension system.  Properly balanced tires can ensure a smooth ride, as well as prolong the health of your vehicle.


Symptoms of unbalanced tires

The most common noticeable symptom of unbalanced tires is vibrations felt when driving.  If your vehicle vibrates as the speed increases and is noticeable around 40-45 mph, you probably need your tires balanced.


How often should balancing be performed?

Tire balancing is particularly important when you purchase new tires.  New tires should be properly balanced when they are installed on your vehicle to prolong the life of your investment.  It is also recommended to have your tires balanced whenever tire rotation is performed.  Additionally, if any tire incurs damage and is repaired, it is important to rebalance the tire to account for the change in tire composition.

Unbalanced tires wear unevenly which can lead to loss of traction or even a blowout.  Additionally, the vibrations caused by unbalanced tires can have adverse effects on your vehicle's suspension system and cause parts to wear out faster.  Components like shocks, struts, wheel bearings, and CVC joints can all suffer if your tires are not properly balanced.
