The Buick Regal | Chicago Buick Dealer

While Buick was historically a trendsetter in the fullsize luxury segment with its popular Riviera model beginning in 1963, the company took its time in developing a car for the lower-priced midsize personal luxury market.  A few years after the launch of competitors like the Pontiac Grand Prix (1969), Chevrolet Monte Carlo (1970), and Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme (1970), Buick unveiled its own midsize luxury offering with the Buick Century Regal in 1973.

The first generation Regal (1973-1977) provided a highly capable, stylish, yet affordable midsize luxury option.  Initially called the Buick Century Regal until 1975, the vehicle featured a long hood, short rear deck and quality chrome flourishes, with a plush interior with wood grain trim.  The Regal was initially offered as just a coupe, with a 4-door sedan option arriving in 1974.  Under the hood, the Regal was powered by a standard V8 engine in its early models, but even the switch to V6 as standard in 1975 gave the vehicle enviable power for its class.

The Buick Regal was revamped in 1978 for its second generation, which lasted 10 solid years.  The 1978 Regal was downsized, but its 3.8L Turbo option offered big power along with firm handling suspension and larger tires and sport wheels.  It was one of only a handful of turbocharged vehicles available at the time.  In 1981, the Regal was given an aerodynamic facelift and quickly became a favorite on the NASCAR circuit. In fact, driver Richard Petty drove a Regal to victory at the 1981 Daytona 500, giving a boost to the vehicle's already growing popularity.  Additional performance-related models followed, with the Buick Regal Grand National in 1982 and the Buick Regal GNX in 1987.

The Regal was again redesigned in 1988 for its third generation with some significant changes.  It was offered as a front-wheel drive model for the first time, as a coupe model only, and it also abandoned its high-end performance options, leaving behind the V8 and turbocharged V6 options. It was still considered a class-leader in power, but in a sense, the Regal was returning to its roots as strictly a personal luxury vehicle.  The third generation underwent a few modifications over its 9-year term, offering a four-door sedan version, signature trim levels of Custom, Limited, and Gran Sport, and standard safety features like antilock brakes and front airbags.

The fourth generation Buick Regal was launched in 1997 and was offered only as a 4-door sedan. The Regal was continuing to target the luxury buyer, offering upscale amenities like heated leather seats, premium sound system, and a plush roomy interior. The GS model of this generation was the most powerful Regal yet, with a supercharged 3.8L V6 engine that produced 240 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque.

The Regal ceased production in 2004 when it was replaced by the Buick Lacrosse, but it made a comeback for the 2011 model year.  The fifth generation Regal is positioned below the larger, more expensive Lacrosse, and has been attracting newer and younger drivers than traditionally expected for the Buick brand.  The new Regal continues to offer unique luxury packages, high-end engine options, and new technologies like eAssist.  After its brief hibernation, it appears as if the Regal is here to stay.
