Motor Trend magazine named the brand-new Chevrolet Volt as the "2011 Motor Trend Car of the Year®." This honor highlights the innovation and promise the electric car brings to the auto industry and to the environment. The Volt is powered by electricity, without needing to be joined to an electrical outlet at all times. The Volt is gas- and emissions-free when going short distances, and when the trip takes a little longer, a gas-powered onboard generator takes over.
Battery Tested
The real promise of the Volt's superior battery comes in its 100,000 mile/8-year warranty. With a battery this strong, the Volt is poised to become the stuff of legends.
The battery takes 10 hours to fully charge with a standard 120-volt line. With a 240-volt line, the battery can charge in as little as 4 hours. In addition to the battery, the Volt is equipped with an on-board gas generator that creates electricity for those longer trips. Most drivers can commute sans gas for only $1.50 of electricity a day.
Interiors To Boot
Keeping with the theme of futuristic technology, the Volt
has two LCD screens in the dashboard.
These screens display speed, battery power, range to recharge or
re-fill, and feedback on the state of the car.
The center console has a high-resolution touch screen that shows
real-time data including energy usage, and allows drivers to program a charging
schedule based around low electricity rates.
Green Through and Through
Not only does the battery power make the Volt the most environmentally friendly car in the field, but everything from its shape to its sound system takes the planet into consideration as well.
The exterior of the car is designed with aerodynamics that allow the Volt to drive longer before needing to be charged or fueled. The closed grill and back edges are what gives the shape a distinct and environmentally-friendly design. Even the Bose® Sound System operates in an energy-efficient capacity.
Plugged In
There are no tricks or hidden obstacles to plugging in the Chevy Volt. It's the same as plugging anything into a standard 120V household outlet. Plug the battery in, and ten hours later, there is a fully charged Volt ready to drive.
For those who want an even faster charging time, having a 240V charging station installed in a garage cuts the charging time down to 4 hours. The 240V circuit is the same as the circuit many clothes dryers run on. To offset the cost of this charging station, many consumers will be eligible for a tax credit.
Safety First
With all the excitement about saving Mother Earth, it can be easy to overlook the incredible safety features the Volt offers. Eight airbags keep drivers and passengers safe in the event of an accident. Additionally, Volt owners receive a five-year subscription to OnStar, including the OnStar Automatic Crash Response, which saves lives in the event of an accident.
The Future Has Arrived
Electricity has the power to make our world a cleaner, safer place to live. Trade in gas for electricity and tap into a source of power that is clean to produce, and inexpensive to boot.
