The Chevrolet Silverado | Chicago Chevrolet Dealer

Chevrolet introduced its first pickup truck in 1930 and launched its C/K series in 1962, the "C" designating 2WD and "K" meaning 4WD.  The Silverado was born out of this C/K series as the name for a higher trim level option that made its debut in 1975.  After almost 25 years as simply a trim option, albeit a popular one, in the 1999 model year, the Silverado finally replaced the C/K series to become a Chevy truck model in its own right.

The 1999 Chevrolet Silverado was an instant hit, being named Motor Trend Truck of the Year in its first year available. Experts and consumers alike praised its smooth ride, sharp handling, quiet engine, great brake response, and premium interiors.  The 1999 Silverado was very versatile, with seemingly endless options for customization, and was equally comfortable as a utility vehicle or everyday vehicle.

Over the years of production, the Silverado remained essentially the same, though various models were introduced to meet any and all consumer needs.  Updates included the Heavy Duty models  (2001), Silverado Super Sport "SS" (2003), and the latest Hybrid version (2005).  Chevy even released a special edition "Intimidator SS" in 2006 in honor of deceased race car driver Dale Earnhardt.

The Silverado's Heavy Duty models are in particular worth noting, as they raised the bar for towing capabilities on passenger trucks.  The Silverado 1500HD and the 2500HD both have more upgraded engines with increased horsepower and torque over the standard Silverado models, making them ideal for towing heavyweight cargo loads. The 2011 Silverado HD has even further technological updates along with its raw power, earning it the title of Motor Trend Truck of the Year for 2011.

The Silverado has remained a favorite in the truck market since its 1999 release, and both consumer feedback and numerous awards point to why it's one of the best selling trucks of all time.  Since its Motor Trend Truck of the Year award in 1999, the Silverado also earned additional distinguished honors such as the North American Truck of the Year for 2007, Car and Drivers Best Pickup Truck for three consecutive years (2001 - 2003), Vincentric's Best Value in America award in 2009, and a Consumers Digest Best Buy award in 2010.
