The Hyundai Elantra made its United States debut in the 1991 model year. This small car was also sold in Australia and South Korea under the name "Avante" and in Europe as a "Lantra," and it wasn't until 2001 when the name became standardized worldwide as the Elantra (except in Korea and Malaysia where the "Avante" remained).

The initial Elantra came in either an entry level or GLS version and was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6-liter twin-cam engine that had 4 cylinders, with the choice of a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. In 1993, the Elantra offered engine upgrades, with now a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine being standard.

The second generation Elantra was launched in 1995 and featured some cosmetic changes, like newer grills, along with the new option of a station wagon body style. Elantra debuted its third

generation in 2000, replacing the wagon with a 4-door hatchback and also upgrading its standard amenities with features like front and front side airbags, air conditioning, power locks, power windows and power steering. The third generation Elantras also boasted significant improvements in fuel economy, horsepower, and exterior styling.

The fourth generation of Elantras ran from 2006-2010 and were defined by interior improvements, making the Elantra the roomiest of its class, as well as the addition of a hybrid model in South Korea, and a new wagon model, the Elantra Touring, in the United States. Again, the new design featured improved fuel efficiency, an ongoing trend for this economical compact car.

The fifth and current generation of the Elantra was debuted at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show. It's powered by a new 1.8L Nu engine producing 148 horsepower that delivers the best power-to-weight in its class. With 20 years under its belt thus far, the Hyundai Elantra is slated to dominate the compact car market for many years to come.
