The Hyundai Santa Fe | Chicago Hyundai Dealer

Although the Hyundai Motor Company has been around since 1967, it did not manufacture its first SUV until 2001.  No time was wasted, however, as the Hyundai Santa Fe was a consumer hit right out of the gate, edging out competitors like the Ford Escape and Pontiac Aztek.  Considered a "Crossover" or "Compact" SUV, the Santa Fe quickly became Hyundai's best seller and helped establish a reputable name for Hyundai in the United States.

The first Santa Fe introduced on the market in 2001 was offered with one of two engine and transmission combinations and standard FWD with optional AWD.  While it was highly fuel efficient, consumers complained of lack of power, prompting the introduction of a 3.5L V6 engine in 2003.  Riding a wave of popularity throughout 2004 and 2005, the Santa Fe released continual improvements to both the interior and exterior, including updates to the grill, taillights, and rear bumper, as well as a redesigning of the interior instrument cluster and safety upgrades to the seatbelts and airbags.

The second generation of Santa Fes was debuted at the 2006 North American International Auto Show, and featured a more contemporary design and all-new unibody SUV platform.  With its perfect blend of safety, style, sophistication and performance, critics instantly touted it as a "must-drive" for consumers shopping in the crossover segment.  Offered in GLS, SE, and Limited versions, the new generation of Santa Fes saw improvements in handling and road noise, as well as previously optional safety features becoming standard, including Electronic Stability Control (ESC), a tire pressure monitor, side-curtain airbags for all seating rows, active front head restraints, and anti-lock brakes.

Thanks to all these improvements, the next generation Santa Fe immediately began racking up the awards.  For safety in particular, the Santa Fe earned the "Top Safety Pick" award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a maximum 5 star safety rating from the NHTSA, and topped Insure.com's "20 least expensive 2009 vehicles to insure" list.  The Santa Fe was also named a Top Pick of 2008 by Consumer Reports Magazine top 10 vehicles for 2008.

The Santa Fe remains one of the most popular models in the Hyundai lineup and a perfect vehicle choice for those seeking a crossover vehicle that is versatile, stylish, powerful, and uncommonly safe.
